The Architecture of Childhood: Understanding the Four Planes of Development
Montessori education is more than a curriculum; it is a flow experience. It is designed to mirror the continuous “self-construction” of the child throughout their developmental journey.
Our programs are rooted in Maria Montessori’s Theory of the Four Planes of Development. This framework recognizes that as a child grows, they inhabit successive “personalities,” each requiring a specific educational approach to match their evolving goals.
The Developmental Continuum
From birth to maturity, the child progresses through four distinct stages:
- 0–6 Years | The Individual Self: A period focused on the development of the self as a functional, independent individual.
- 6–12 Years | The Social Being: A transition toward understanding society, culture, and the wider world.
- 12–18 Years | The Emerging Adult: The “birth” of the adult persona and the deep quest for a personal sense of self.
- 18–24 Years | The Mature Personality: A period of consolidation, where the young adult prepares to take their place in the world.
