The Architecture of Childhood: Understanding the Four Planes of Development

Montessori education is more than a curriculum; it is a flow experience. It is designed to mirror the continuous “self-construction” of the child throughout their developmental journey.

Our programs are rooted in Maria Montessori’s Theory of the Four Planes of Development. This framework recognizes that as a child grows, they inhabit successive “personalities,” each requiring a specific educational approach to match their evolving goals.

The Developmental Continuum

From birth to maturity, the child progresses through four distinct stages:

  • 0–6 Years | The Individual Self: A period focused on the development of the self as a functional, independent individual.
  • 6–12 Years | The Social Being: A transition toward understanding society, culture, and the wider world.
  • 12–18 Years | The Emerging Adult: The “birth” of the adult persona and the deep quest for a personal sense of self.
  • 18–24 Years | The Mature Personality: A period of consolidation, where the young adult prepares to take their place in the world.

Why Train with IIMS?

Our course of study provides you with the theoretical depth to:

  • Identify the Child’s Essence: Understand who the child is at their current developmental stage.
  • Recognize Developmental Tasks: Pinpoint the specific milestones the child is working toward.
  • Facilitate Growth: Learn the precise interventions required from a Montessorian to help the child achieve their full potential.

Join us to transform your understanding of education from “instruction” to “support for life.

Our courses

Pre Primary

The 0–24 Year Spectrum: While many programs stop at early childhood, our training is anchored in the full Four Planes of Development.
Precision Observation Skills: We go beyond the “what” and “how” to the “who.” You will learn the clinical art of observation
Adaptable Pedagogy: Children aren’t static, and neither is our method. You’ll learn to recognize the “successive personalities” of the child
Theory Grounded in Reality: Drawing from decades of field experience—including high-impact interventions in diverse socio-economic settings—our curriculum is battle-tested.
Global Credibility, Local Context: Our program combines the gold standards of international Montessori thought (AMI/IMC) with a deep understanding of the Indian educational landscape

Primary

Heritage-Driven Instruction: Our faculty includes educators trained directly by the stalwarts who continued Maria Montessori’s work in India. This ensures the training is enriched with authentic anecdotes and practical tips born from decades of real-world classroom experience.
Professional Blended Format: Designed for the modern educator, the MPD combines the academic depth of live online theory on weekdays with supervised, in-person practice sessions on Saturdays. This allows you to work with physical Montessori equipment at affiliated centers without pausing your current professional role.
Targeted at the “Reasoning Mind”: While many programs focus on the “absorbent mind” of younger children, this course specifically equips you for the 6–12 age group. You will learn to leverage the elementary child’s emerging powers of imagination and abstract thought to teach complex concepts like Algebra, Geometry, and the evolution of civilization.
